We Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside

11 May by Tim Conlan

Having had the match against Chelmsford conceded and then expunged, an intrepid band set off from Victoria via Costa Coffee or in Stevos case a pretentious Artisan Coffee shop towards the seaside town of Worthing, or to be more precise a small town just outside of Worthing called Durrington on sea, which ironically is quite a way from the sea.
Delays were rumoured but our band of 10 including supporter Tim and WAG Sue arrived safe in Durrington 90 minutes later then scheduled.
Changing rooms were found and Stevo took the warm up. The pitch was quite large but the surface was uneven and the goals were massive. Having 4foot 11 inch goalkeeper Chris Cooper as our net guardian seemed somewhat foolhardy.
Os started with Cooper in goal, a midfield of Tongue, Barrick and Skaith and Ridley up front. Stevenson and Conlan warmed the bench.
The opening exchanges were fairly even with neither goalie unduly worried. The Os started to take control but with no end result. The powerful shots lacked accuracy and the accurate shots lacked power. Stevo replaced Barrick but the first half produced no goals and one verbal warning for Stevenson Otherwise the ref was extremely lenient.
Half time saw Barrick replace Skaith and the game continued in the same vein. Suddenly Jon saw a space at the right hand post and steered the ball there with the goalie unsighted. 1-0 Os.
The next event of note was a thunderous toe poke from one of the opposition subs. It descended from about 15 feet to hit the top of the bar and bounce sway. The referee confirmed that if it had been on target he would have allowed it. Enough said.
Not long after the energetic Ridley pounced on a loose ball and smashed it in via the goalies chest to make it 0-2 to the O's.
There was then just time for Trevor to perform a clumsy , angry Mayday dance with the opposition’s best player which saw them both sin binned. The manager later congratulated him for taking one for the team.
In true O's fashion the team then made it's way to the nearest pub for fish and chips, beer and banter.
We never did make the seaside.
