Orient Over 70s Reds Pay Penalty!

15 Oct by Trevor Ridley

Tuesday 14th October saw Leyton Orient Walking FC over 70s Reds make the trip round the M25 to Billericay and the EWFL over 70s Cup finals.

Having qualified for Finals day and having played very well in their last set of league games, the over 70s Reds approached their Cup group games with confidence. However, the day turned out to be all about “What could have been!”

First opponent in the group stage games was Romford. In spite of dominating possession, Orient could not find the wherewithal to fashion a decent scoring opportunity. This left them open to a controversial (was he in the area?) sucker punch goal for Romford that proved decisive. Finals score: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Romford.

To have a chance of getting to the final, Orient needed to win their final two games. Next opponent, Eastwood Falcons. Orient again dominated possession but had much more purpose and fashioned several good chances, one of which rebounded from the crossbar. However, in spite of being awarded two penalties, one saved and one placed wide, Orient could not find the net. Once again they conceded late and lost a game they should have won. Final score: Eastwood Falcons 1 v Leyton Orient.

Orient went into the final game with Barnet with their chances of proceeding further now dashed. Despite this they produced a good performance against the eventual Cup runners up. The game was drawn but was one arguably they could have won. Final score: Barnet 0 v 0 Leyton Orient.

Leyton Orient over 70s Reds Squad: Tony Weston (Gk), Steve Tongue (Cpt), Gerry Schneider, Steve Skaith, Dave Jones, Trevor Ridley, Jon Barrick.

Mick Mullins, Manager.
