Orient 65 Reds Clinch League Title!

24 Sep by Trevor Ridley

Having already secured promotion, Leyton Orient Walking FC over 65 Reds went into their final two games of the Essex Walking Football League over 65s Division 2 as League leaders and needing at least 3 points to secure the Essex League Division 2 title.

Their final two opponents could not have been more challenging, our own Leyton Orient Whites team and then Chelmsford City who were sitting second in the League. A win against the Whites would secure the title and make the game against Chelmsford irrelevant apart from bragging rights. However, a draw or loss would give Chelmsford the chance to snatch the title, should they win both their games.

The game against the Whites was a tense affair with the Whites defending stoutly and the Reds not hitting their stride. The Whites were the first team to take points off the Reds in the first game between the sides and also to score against them in a 2-2 draw. No surprise then as the Whites again frustrated the Reds to secure a draw. Final score: Leyton Orient Reds 0 v 0 Leyton Orient Whites.

With Chelmsford having won their first game, they were now only 2 points behind the Reds, meaning a win for them would see them take the title.

Orient Reds started the deciding game in resolute fashion. An early error by a Chelmsford defender saw the ball break to Ridley who finished adroitly with a toe poke into the net. This settled the nerves somewhat. However, Chelmsford played their way into the game and looked dangerous. An equalising “goal” was rightly disallowed for running with the Reds play becoming disjointed. A stern talking to at half time from the injured stand in Manager Stevenson, saw a much more composed display in the second half as his words were heeded, with the Reds retaining possession and managing the game much better. They had the chance to go further ahead when Chelmsford conceded a penalty for a fourth running offence. However the Chelmsford keeper managed to save the spot kick. Orient now on three running offences then also conceded a penalty after a fourth transgression. A fine save by Weston ensured that the Reds lead was maintained. The Reds continued to manage the game and despite Chelmsford pressure they could not find an equaliser. Orient emerged triumphant League winners by five points and also unbeaten all season! Final score: Chelmsford City 0 v 1 Leyton Orient Reds (Ridley).

Captain Mick Mullins commented “After a nervous draw against our Whites, we stepped up brilliantly to beat our near rivals Chelmsford to round off a great season. Though missing a couple of regulars in Cox and Stevenson, those that came into the team did us proud. A real squad effort. Congratulations to all who played this season and thanks to David Clancy for managing the team.”

The final game was a friendly against Romford. With the title secured, the Reds relaxed and played some excellent football. A 2-0 win with fine team moves expertly rounded off with goals by Slater and Andy Barrick. Final score: Romford 0 v 2 Leyton Orient Reds (Slater, A Barrick).

Leyton Orient Reds Squad: Tony Weston (Gk), Mick Mullins (Cpt), Micky Howard, Jon Barrick, Andy Barrick, Tim Conlan, Derek Slater, Trevor Ridley.

Scorers: Ridley, Slater, A Barrick.
