Women Put In Solid Performance

25 May by Trevor Ridley

Leyton Orient came into this third set of matches in the Herts Women’s Walking Football League with Sam Baker and Ann Matthews having suffered serious injuries the previous day in the Essex League and with at least two other players carrying injuries.

Orient kicked off the day against Football Fitness Phoenix. Orient controlled the game but could not hit the back of the net. The O’s hit the post and had five times more shots than the opposition. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 0 Football Fitness First.

The second game of the day saw Orient take on Cheshunt Eagles. Eagles were second in the league and showed why. A myriad of saves from goalkeeper Williams kept orient in the game. By the end of play the team had preserved a clean sheet and a very valuable point. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 0 Cheshunt Eagles.

Game number three was against Cheshunt Hawks. Great saves from Williams locked out Hawks and allowed Orient to fashion an excellent move with a lay off from Kavanagh to Selner who scored with an excellent shot. A well deserved hard fought win. Final score: Cheshunt Hawks 0 v 1 Leyton Orient (Selner).

Luton Town Orange were Orient’s fourth opponents of the day. The only citrus fruit supplied were those bought by Orients Anna Murray. Thanks Anna for the orange slices. Much appreciated. For some reason that cannot be fathomed Orient make hard work at putting games against Luton away. This time Orient managed to miss two gilt edged chances and relied upon the magnificent Williams to save a penalty so maintaining Orient’s unbeaten run without conceding a goal. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 0 Luton Town Orange.

The final game of the day was against Chesham Utd. Chesham are fast becoming Orient’s nemesis. Again the O’s were holding their own and stifling the Chesham attack. Again Orient were undone in the final minutes. Again it was a story of maximum effort with no reward. However sweet will be the day the O’s beat them. Its coming! Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Chesham.

Manager Sherrille Haytt said after play there were “Heroic efforts from the team who overcame the loss of our injured members to
keep four clean sheets and concede only one goal. I wish all our injured Sam, Ann and Jo a speedy recovery and for those who played despite being less than 100% thank you and well done. We go again in June. In the meantime let us hope we can celebrate an Orient victory at Wembley on Sunday 25th”

Leyton Orient squad: Chris Williams (Gk), Debbie Lewzey, Andree Selner (Cpt), Lynda Dowling, Clare Kavanagh, Clare Nwofor, Anna Murray, Frances Handley.

Manager: Sherrille Hyatt.
