A Mad but Meaningful Idea

Help Give Kids Breakfast and a Bond with Nature with Ken Gannon

This idea started as a bit of madness – but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made.

Many kids head off to school each day in Uganda without breakfast. What if I could change that, and give them something more – a sense of responsibility, connection, and joy?

I’m planning to give each child a chicken. Yes, a real one! Each morning, the child will feed their hen, and in return, the hen will provide them with a fresh egg – their breakfast. To make it fun and personal, each hen will be tagged or have it’s leg painted, so each child knows which one is theirs.

I’m in talks to buy a good number of hens. The going rate is about 33,000 shillings each, but I’m negotiating to get them at around $5 or £5 per bird. Still not cheap, but hopefully it will happen.

That’s where you come in.

If you can spare the price of a round at Wetherspoons or the winnings from a lucky pools ticket – or even just your good wishes – it would mean the world.

Every bit helps, and all the money raised will go directly to the flock, which will be proudly christened: “Gift from the Nut House.”

Dig deep if you can. Let’s make this mad idea a meaningful reality.
