More Positives From Women

4 May by Trevor Ridley

On Sunday 27th April Leyton Orient Walking Fc women made the short trip to Cheshunt for their second round of fixtures in the Herts Women’s Walking Football League.

Orient’s first game of the day was against Luton Town Orange. Orient started slowly and accumulated four non-walking offences in next to no time. This resulted in the O’s conceding a penalty to Luton, which they duly converted. Orient then were awarded a penalty of their own when Luton also had four not-walking offences. Unfortunately Orient failed to covert their spot kick. Final score: Luton 1 v 0 Leyton Orient.

Next up were Cheshunt Hawks. Orient produced a much better tempo in this game. Hawks were pulled up for foul play on Handley, and Baker put away the resulting penalty superbly. Orient were awarded a second penalty for four running offences against Hawks. This time Cavanagh put away the penalty only to have the referee give a retake because he had not blown his whistle. This time, Cavanagh hit the post. Final score: Hawks 0 v 1 Leyton Orient (Baker).

Game three and Orient faced Football Fitness Phoenix. This was a much better display from Orient who bossed the game. A good left-footed shot from Kavanagh saw the first goal. A Handley assist to Baker gave Orient the second. Despite peppering the goal with shots Orient could not find another goal. Final score: Football Fitness Phoenix 0 v 2 Leyton Orient (Kavanagh, Baker).

Chesham Utd were Orient penultimate opposition who were the current leaders of the league and acquitted themselves well. Good defending and goalkeeping by Williams kept Chesham at bay for most of the game. Unfortunately, a last-minute goal by Chesham undid all Orient’s good work.
Final score: Chesham 1 v 0 Leyton Orient.

The last game of the day was against Cheshunt Eagles. Orient played well, taking the game to Eagles immediately. Pressing the opposition saw an early shot wide by Kavanagh. The only goal was scored when Handley kept her cool after an error by the keeper to calmly bury the ball in the net. Final score: Eagles 0 v 1 Leyton Orient (Handley).

Manager Sherrille Hyatt said “I was disappointed to lose two games but saw enough to feel positive that better will come. Keeping up the momentum playing Saturday, followed by Sunday, and avoiding injuries will be key. Big thank you and welcome to Clare Nwofor who made her Orient debut.”

Leyton Orient squad: Chris Williams (Gk), Clare Kavanagh, Andree Selner (Cpt), Ann Matthews, Frances Handley, Sam Baker (Vice-Cpt), Debbie Lewzey, Clare Nwofor.

Manager: Sherrille Hyatt

Goalscorers: Baker 2, Handley, Kavanagh.
