WFA Cup Disappointment for 70s

28 Apr by Trevor Ridley

Leyton Orient Walking FC over 70s travelled to Barnet on Friday, 25th April for this WFA Cup first round game.

Orient started well and soon took the lead as Stevenson robbed a defender and deftly chipped over the keeper into the net.

Barnet responded quickly and their fast paced passing and movement brought them two goals to put them ahead. At the end of the first twenty minutes the running offences stood at 6 for Orient and just one for the opposition. This meant that the Os line up was constantly changing as sin binning was avoided. This disrupted Orient’s flow. Quite how Orient were pulled up so often while the opposition were not was puzzling. However, Orient rallied well and Stevenson picked up the ball on the left and again beat the keeper with a clever shot inside the far post to equalise. As the game looked to be heading for penalties, Barnet found a late winner with a well paced low shot. Final score: Barnet over 70s 3 v 2 Leyton Orient over 70s (Stevenson 2).

Manager Mick Mullins commented: “This was a game we found hard to get into due to the constant need for players to be subbed due to “running” offences and also the loss of skipper Steve Tongue to a knee injury. We came back well after going behind and were undone by their late winner.”

Leyton Orient squad: Keith Everett (Gk), Steve Tongue (Cpt), Gerry Schneider, Tony Brooks, Hassan Kassam, Chris Conlan, Phil Stevenson, Steve Skaith, Trevor Ridley.

Goalscorers: Stevenson 2.
