Orient 60s Whites Undone

19 Jul by Trevor Ridley

On Tuesday 9th July Leyton Orient Walking FC over 60s Whites travelled to Chelmsford four Over 60s Division 2 league games.

First up was Chelmsford Blues. Orient started with Everett in goal, Rains at the back, Stevenson in centre midfield, Wahlhaus and Dooley wide and Guerrini up front. Orient start well with good passing and possession. There were no real chances created by either side. Out of nowhere Wahlhaus accidentally stepped into the Orient penalty area thus concedeing a penalty which was well saved by Everett. At the start of the second half Inkpen replaced Guerrini. Both teams started well. Chelmsford then scored with turn and shot whhich went across Everett and in off the post. There was then a good move by Orient down the left which culminated in a shot by Dooley which hit the post. Chelmsford tried to play possession football but Orient squeezed them high up the pitch. Following an injury Dooley was replaced by C Conlan. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Chelmsford City Blues.

Orient’s next opponents were Chelmsford Clarets. The game starts with both teams playing well, good passing and movement. Shots by C Conlan and Guerrini were both blocked on the edge of the box. Again out of nowhere Rains accidentally steps into the Orient penalty area and a penalty was given. This time Chelmsford Claret’s converted high to Everett’s left. This was a good game with both teams passing well but eventually the Clarets forward did a neat turn and shot across Everett for their second. At half time Stevenson came on for Inkpen as Inkpen had an injury which put him out for the rest of the day. Unfortunately Dooley is also suffering and is also out. The second half started with both teams playing well. As the half went on the Clarets took control and due to lack of closing down by the O’s they scored from a shot from midfield high into the net past Everett. There were a couple of long shots by the O’s but they didn’t trouble the Chelmsford keeper. Final score: Chelmsoford City Clarets 3 v 1 Leyton Orient (Wahlhaus).

Orient’s third game of the day was against Billericay Reds. The game started out as a highly competitive pacy game. Good quick and accurate passing by both sides. In the second half the game continues in the same vein but a lack of closing down by the O’s leads to a goal to Billericay against the run of play. This is a game Orient should have won but let it slip. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Billericay Reds.

The final game of the day was against Stones Athletic Blues. Orient started really well and controlled the game. Good keeping and blocking by Stones keep Orient from scoring. A good shot from the O’s and save by the Stone’s keeper leads to a corner. Guerrini takes the corner quickly and with a very pacy pass finds Rains on the edge of the box who shot first time. The ball squirmed under the keeper and finally Orient score. In the second half Orient re-assert their control but sloppy ball control by Guerrini on the left allowed the Stones striker to pass the ball into the empty Orient net. Orient were still in control but could not put the ball away. Eventually, right at the end of the game, a Stones player shoots and scores breaking Orient hearts. Yet another game Orient should have won easily. Final score: Stones Athletic 2 v 1 Leyton Orient (Rains).

After play captain, Steve Guerrini summed up, “Overall we played well in all games but sloppy defensive work and encroaching in our own penalty area cost us at least two games.”

Leyton Orient squad: Steve Guerrini (Cpt), Keith Everett (Gk), Peter Rains, Phil Stevenson, Tony Wahlhaus, Chris Conlan, Vince Dooley, Steve Inkpen.

Goalscorers: Rains, Wahlhaus.
