Tough But Not Fruitless

18 Jun by Trevor Ridley

Despite the early downpours of the day, the trip to Cheshunt on Sunday 16h June for the Herts Premier League tournament turned out to be a hot and sunny afternoon.

The referees were much tighter this afternoon on the ‘not walking/running’ and four offences leading to a penalty than had previously been the case.

The first game was against Chesham United – this team has some England players and they top the league. Orient were unfortunate to draw them first before they had got into their stride. Chesham took no time in settling into their rhythm; and Orient went behind to an early goal following an interception deep in their own half after a pass out from the GK. A very similar second goal soon followed as Orient didn’t play as widely as they have on previous occasions. Chesham GK saved a shot from Bent and a corner from Kavanagh was blocked. Chesham then had a penalty awarded following four warnings for ‘not walking’ – which was converted. Williams made a few good saves which prevented Orient ending the first half with more than three goals against them. Shortly after the restart, Orient were awarded a penalty after Chesham committed their fourth ‘running’ offence, and Handley expertly converted. A further shot from Handley was saved. Despite the defence pressing forward and not being able to get back swiftly leaving an open goal, Williams was able to stop the free shot from Chesham. Despite further saves from Williams, Orient finished as the losing side. Final score: Chesham United 4 v 1 Leyton Orient (Handley).

Next up were Cheshunt Eagles who scored early with a good shot past the keeper. Williams made a few excellent saves but Cheshunt then scored a second when Orient lost the ball in midfield. In the second half, the Orient midfield started to find their feet and a number of blocks from the Orient defence prevented further goals. An unusual save from a Handley penalty thwarted a goal from Orient Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 2 Cheshunt Eagles.

The final game of the afternoon was against Cheshunt Hawks. Orient started well having finally found their form and Ahlstrom scored from a great pass from Bent. Bent then put a shot wide and Williams made a good save. Captain Selner took a penalty after the four running offence by Hawks and scored. Bent then scored and Grint had a good strike saved. A fourth running offence meant Williams faced another penalty which she was unable to save. Final score: Cheshunt Hawks 1 v 3 Leyton Orient (Ahlstrom, Bent, Selner).

Manager for the day Hyatt thanked everyone and said ‘Fantastic effort and good team spirit. Great final game’, whilst captain Selner said ‘We certainly grew into it and hopefully we can pick up next time where we left off today’
