Dour Day For Orient

29 May 2024 by Trevor Ridley

On the morning of Tuesday 14th May Leyton Orient Walking FC over 60s Whites travelled to Billericay. An unpleasant cold, rainy morning greeted the team, which is a shame as the weather has been so good recently!!

First up for Orient Whites was Billericay Town Red. The Os started with Everett in goal, Rains at the back, Guerrini in central midfield, Baker and Dooley wide and Wahlhaus up front in a 1-3-1 formation. Conlan and Corrigan started on the bench. A poor and slow start for the Os gave Billericay the initiative. The opposition was allowed to control the ball and pass around easily. Orient did manage to reduced Billericay to a couple of missed shots without troubling their goal keeper although Orient’s performance improved as the half went on. The second half saw Orient change things with Conlan on for Baker and Wahlhaus moved to central midfield and Guerrini moved up front. Orient started much better and were dominating and passing the ball round well. This produced far more Orient shooting chances. The Billericay keeper kept us out and played a good game. But still the Os final pass wouldn’t come resulting in Guerrini trying a speculative backheal shot on goal which went wide!! This was a game Orient could have won. Final score: Leyton Orient Whites 0 v 0 Billericay Town Red.

Orient’s next game was against Stones Athletic Blue. This time Orient started with Everett in goal, Corrigan at the back, Wahlhaus in central midfield, Baker and Corrigan wide and Dooley up front in a 1-3-1 formation with Rains and Guerrini on the bench. Orient started much better than in their previous game producing three chances, first by Wahlhaus then Conlan and Dooley all saved by the Stones keeper. Orient dominate the game, passing the ball round well could not put the ball in the back of the net. Everett in the Orient goal was not troubled at all. At the start of the second half Guerrini came on for Dooley up front and Rains came on for Baker. Again Orient started well, passing and moving the ball round really well. A quick passing move up front saw Guerrini square the ball to Corrigan, putting him on goal, but to no avail. As the half progressed Stones had more of the ball but didn’t trouble Orient over much. Yet another game Orient should have won!! Final score: Stones Athletic Blues 0 v 0 Leyton Orient Whites

The last game of the day saw Orient Whites take on Eastwood Falcons Blue. The starting line-up was Everett in goal, Rains at the back, Guerrini in central midfield, Baker and Conlan wide and Dooley up front in a 1-3-1 formation with Wahlhaus and Corrigan on the bench. This game would prove to be Orient’s most difficult of the day. Eastwood started really well and putting Orient on the back foot. The O’s defended really well though and reduced Everett to saving a couple of long shots which didn’t trouble him too much. Good passing by Orient produced some half chances but again they couldn’t put the ball away. This team were quite aggressive and played the referee very well. An example of this was Eastwood leaning into the Orient players and the ref not penalising them. In the second half Guerrini was replaced by Wahlhaus in central midfield and Corrigan came on for Baker. The second period saw Eastwood start very smartly producing two quick shots which were saved by Everett. The game was now being dominated by Eastwood who were in full control, but the O’s were defending well. Eventually the pressure told and a quick passing move left Orient open at the back for the first time and their striker shot across Everett just inside the far post. Eastwood now played keep ball for the last 5 mins seeing out the game. Final score: Leyton Orient Whites 0 v 1 Eastwood Falcons.

After play Orient Whites captain, Steve Gurrini said. “Overall I think we played well, Eastwood were a step up but we should have beaten Billericay and Stones. We needed an out and out striker!!”
