Tough Start At Top

On Sunday 19th May Leyton Orient Walking FC women’s team travelled to Cheshunt for the first round of matches following the mid-season split. Due to their excellent results in the first legs of the Herts Womens Walking Football League the team found themselves in the Premier League section for the second part of the season.

First up were Cheshunt Hawks who attacked straight from the off and forcing Williams into two fine saves with another shot going wide. Dowling then had to retire injured and was replaced Selner. Unfortunately the next meaningful actions was a goal by cheshunt. Cheshunt continued to lead Orient a merry dance and but for Williams in goal would have increased their lead. Orient did start to turn it round with a good through ball by Kavanagh finding Baker but she could quite connect with the ball. An Orient freekick did lead to a good shot on the Cheshunt goal by Selner. Williams was called into action again and made another godd stop to keep Orient in the game. Orient were really ramping up the pressure with shots by Kavanagh, Baker, Selner, Baker again and even Hyatt but Orient just could not make any of them count. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Cheshunt Hawks.

Orient’s next game was against a very good Chesham United side. Williams again pulled off a number of good saves and Orient’s passing betweeen Selner and James was putting pressure on Chesham only for Chesham to go up the other end and score. Orient put more pressure on Chesham to try to get back into the game with James get a shot in which unfortunately went wide. With Orient pushing for the equaliser Chesham broke away and scored their second. Orient were not for giving up and Selner had a powerful shot that went just over the bar. With time running out Chesham made sure of the points with a third goal. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 3 Chesham United.

The final game of the day against Cheshunt Eagles really summed up Orient’s luck on the day. Williams was again in excellent form pulling off multiple saves and James had several shots that were either saved, went wide or over the bar. Cheshunt hit the post and the bar and Lewzey got in an excellent block. Orient were passing and moving well in midfield. One good piece of midfled play led to a freekick in the Cheshunt half. Unfortunately the freekick came to nothing and Cheshunt broke up field to score a breakaway goal. Orient ramped up the pressure and more shots by James and Grint tested the Cheshunt keeper but Orient’s luck was out. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Cheshunt Eagles.
