Over 60s Battle On!

29 Jun 2022 by Trevor Ridley

On Tuesday 27th June Leyton Orient over 60s had three tough fixtures in this round of the Essex Walking Football League.

First up was Eastwood Falcons. A well organised display by Orient led to a very tight game. However, Orient lacked a goal threat. The game was decided by an excellent Eastwood forward shot that gave Sullivan in goal no chance. The Reds were unfortunate to lose Dalton to injury before half time which saw him unable to play any further part in the remaining games. Final score: Eastwood 1 v 0 Leyton Orient.

Norwich, the reigning champions, were next up. Norwich are a very mobile side and played very good football. However, Orient were getting into their stride and were matching the Norwich first half efforts. The Os were very unlucky not to go in one up at the break after a stunning Inkpen shot rocketed back into play off the Norwich post. The second half again saw Orient match their opponents until a snap shot put Norwich ahead. Orient could not find the goal for a draw which would have been a fair result. Final score: Leyton Orient 0 v 1 Norwich.

Final game of the day was against Little Oakley. With Inkpen switching to an unfamiliar forward position Orient took the game to Oakley in their best showing of the day. Orient pressed forward at every opportunity and peppered the opponents goal with no reward. When Oakley managed to get a toe hold in the game in the second half, they found Sullivan in fine form to keep them out. Dunn, on his debut for the 60s, had an excellent game giving the Oakley star player no room to create while also pushing Orient forward. Final score: Little Oakley 0 v 0 Orient.

Leyton Orient over 60s squad: Tony Sullivan (Gk), Neil Burns (Cpt), Maurice Birnbaum, Steve Inkpen, Matt Dalton, Mick Brennan, Stevie Dunn, Peter Rains.
