Keeping Connected - Week Nineteen

28 Jul 2020 by Trevor Ridley

It gives me great pleasure to report that the four training sessions at Ashtons Playing Fields last week all went to plan. The two sessions on Wednesday could not have had better weather and it was great that everyone was more than happy with the facilities and that they could finally play some competitive football even if there were restrictions in place. The Thursday women’s session on the grass was enjoyed by all with some excellent goals scored even using the mini goals. Saturday’s workers session, also on grass, certainly exposed all the cobwebs but it wasn’t long before the ball was being played around as if we had never been away.

There is still some places on the Late session on Wednesday, the women’s session on Thursday and the worker session on Saturday. Unfortunately we are still not encouraging those who are shielding to attend. For those who just want to come and watch and see old friends then as long as the two metre social distancing is observed that’s perfectly fine – it would be good to see you.

There is just the one birthday to celebrate this week – Many Happy Returns to Doug Stone. Hope you have a great day Doug.

This week I was allowed to host the Monday Night Zoom Quiz and it seemed to be enjoyed by all. The winners yet again were The Conligans, in second were Anne and Tony Weston closely followed by Caroline and John Bancroft and Mary and Mick Mullins. The award for getting the right answer to the most obscure Sports question of the evening has to go to the Mullins for answering the following question correctly (answer at bottom): ‘George Heslop, who played for Manchester City from 1965 to 1972, was the first professional footballer known to wear what?’. The Conligans will be quiz masters next Monday night so we are bound to have new winners.

Pilates is continuing on a Thursday for the time being but this will change once the club goes back to it’s normal Thursday walking football sessions.

For those who like nothing more than to mix football and cooking I would recommend popping over the BBC iPlayer and search out Celebrity Master Chef, Series 15, Episode 11 and then fast forward to the thirty minutes mark to see the four chefs preparing lunch for one hundred Leyton Orient players and staff including cameo interviews of what some of the diners thought of the food.

Seeing all that rather tasty food reminded me:

“I always say a squad is like a good meal. I’m not a great cook, but a good meal takes a wee bit of time. But also, to offer a good meal, you need good ingredients.” – Brendan Rogers

And :

“The wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings. Let food be your medicine.” – Hippocrates

See you at training.
