Keeping Connected - Week Fourteen

23 Jun 2020 by Trevor Ridley

Well it wasn’t walking football as we have experienced it before but we were kicking a ball, shaking off the cobwebs, finding out just how rusty we had become in lockdown and enjoying some much welcome banter with old friends. YES – TRAINING IS BACK!!

All training sessions are currently taking place at Chingford Rugby Club where there is a large car park and plenty of room for group separation and social distancing. The first two training sessions last Wednesday 17th June saw a total of twenty players being put through their paces by the four coaches. The first session between 10:30 and 11:30 and coached by Terry Sommers and Trevor Ridley, took place in glorious sunshine. The second session, with coaches Mick Mullins and Derek Myers, wasn’t so lucky and got hit by a veritable deluge which drenched everyone although it didn’t stop them carrying on.

Thursday evening saw the re-start of the women’s training session with four players being trained by coach, Trevor Ridley. There was fun and laughter and some good skills on show although it took a while to get back in the groove.

The final session of the week was on Saturday morning. Aimed in the first instance at those who are working during the day and can’t make the Wednesday session this session was well attended and coaches Darren Mockler and Paul Franklin put the ten players through some testing exercises.

So no walking football matches yet but plenty of fitness, technique and skills work which will bode well for our eventual return to our normal gameplay walking football.

All sessions will continue in their current format until 7th July when the situation will be reassessed by the committee with a view to moving back to Ive Farm at the earliest possible date.

Until that time all sessions will continue at Chingford Rugby Club and will follow the strict FA Guidelines for grassroot training. Sessions will be listed in the Events section of the App the week prior to the scheduled session.

If anyone has any questions about the current training schedule or the future training plans please email the Club at leytonorientwalkingfc@gmail.com

This week we have three birthdays to celebrate: Mike O’Brien, Fiona Kyte, Helen Tutt – Many Happy Returns to you all.

Monday night was quiz night again with Graham Manicom as our Quiz Master. With question categories including the Swinging Sixties, Music and Capital Cities it was a tightly fought contest. Last week’s Champions were not to be toppled and John and Caroline again came top with 47 points. Tony and Nikki Wahlhaus as well as Tony Young came a very close equal second with a highly respectable 45 points. Thanks again to Graham Manicom for organising such a fun evenings entertainment.

Remember that Zoom meet-ups are still happening every Friday between 11am and 12 noon. To sign up just pop over to the Zoom Meet-Up Event in the App and RSVP.

We are also continuing to run Ruth Tongue’s Pilates sessions on a Thursday morning between 11am and 12 noon. Again pop over to the Events section for all the details.

Only one thought this week but it seemed so appropriate that I didn’t think it needed company:

“Keep on going, and the chances are that you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I never heard of anyone ever stumbling on something sitting down.” – Charles F. Kettering

Take care, be safe and see you soon.
