Excitement Mounts Ahead of Euro Trip

15 Sep 2017 by Trevor Ridley

The tension is really starting to build with just over two days before the Leyton Orient Walking Footballl team fly out to Holland for the European Walking Football Festival. Competing in Europe for the first time and up against some of the biggest clubs on the continent really has quickened the pulse.

The majority of the team are flying from Stansted to Amsterdam at 7am on Monday morning landing at Schiphol at 9am. Once through customs we travel by train from Schiphol to Arnhem getting there at about 12:30. Then by local bus for the 12 minute trip to the Vitesse Arnhem training complex at Papendal where we will check in to our allocated hotel. At 2pm we are due to go on a cultural visit to a local open air museum before returning to Papendal for the opening ceremony at 6pm. Our captain, Tony Wahlhaus, will be giving a short introduction to the team and what Leyton Orient Walking Football does for our local community in East London. Hopefully this will be recorded for posterity.

The Walking Football Festival starts at 9:30am on Tuesday morning and this is where the fun really begins. We have no idea the standard we are up against however we do know that a few of the rules are very different from our usual rules: No goalkeeper; small 1 metre high goals; no ball allowed above 1 metre; no contact or tackling. Throughout the tournament we will be wearing the current Orient first team shirts kindly supplied by Leyton Orient in support of our endeavours.

Watch this site for ongoing updates on how the team gets on over the three days of the tournament. COYOs!
